Southgate Family Church, on the Three Estates in King’s Norton, hosted the first Permission to Smile Tea Party, the church acting as a local catalyst to help translate the campaign’s message into local action. About 90 residents came, half church members and half other local residents. Martin Graham of Permission to Smile spoke about the need for more community and explained how residents on the same street can club together to start a Street Association, who’s strap-line is ‘friendship, fun, belonging, a helping hand’. As a result, 15 Street Associations are being taken forward in the area. Other Tea Parties are now being planned with churches, schools and GP surgeries.
